Opito Peter, a 78-year-old man from Northern Uganda, recently received the gift of a Bible for the first time in his life. Peter lives with his wife, Imat Tericiana, but has struggled to meet their immediate needs in the past. Recently, acommunityeducator group in Lira began supporting Peter and his wife because of their old age. In Peter’s community, Samaritan’s Purse has trained church leaders and other believers to support people affected by HIV; as well as widows, orphans, and the elderly.
As the Samaritan’s Purse team went into Peter’s home, they were surprised that they did not find a Bible or even a hymn book. This was because both Peter and his wife are believers. Peter acknowledged that he needed a Bible for his spiritual growth, but expressed that he was never able to afford one in the past.
However, on this day, a big smile came across Peter’s face as he received his copy of the Luo Bible. He immediately began flipping through the pages while saying, “I don’t remember when I last held the Bible in my hands, and was able to read it.”Peter went on to explain that he doesn’t leave his home much because of his old age. He stated, “Now I have got a companion as my wife goes out to work in the garden. I will keep myself busy with the Word of God. I pray for God’s blessing on those who care for the spiritual needs of the old ones too, and I promise to share my Bible with my neighbors who do not have.”

Ogwang Patrick, a 29-year-old who lives in Northern Uganda, is an active member of the Anglican Church. Last year, Patrick joined a community-educator group, which was initiated by Samaritan’s Purse in Adwari sub-county, Lira. This group of educators is trained to support and care for people who are living with HIV; as well as the elderly, widowed, orphaned, and vulnerable. Earlier in the year, Samaritan’s Purse distributed Bibles to some of the educators, but not all of them were able to receive one. Patrick was among the few educators who were lacking a Bible. For many weeks, he would bring his request before his community members, and even the Samaritan’s Purse staff. They advised Patrick to make the Bible one of his prayer items, as they had already distributed all the Bibles, and weren’t sure they would be able to procure more. Miraculously, God answered Patrick’s prayer, and Luo Bibles were provided through Ark Aid to be distributed to the remaining educators who had missed the previous distribution.
Patrick Ogwang belongs to a group of intercessors who are prayer warriors in their church. In most cases, people call him to pray with them in their homes. On 3rd Dec, 2009, Patrick received his Bible. On that same evening, a lady possessed by an evil spirit was brought to his home in order to be prayed for. Patrick was happy to report, “I will use the Bible this evening to command the evil spirit out of the lady. In the book of Mark, Jesus Christ commanded an evil spirit out of a boy.”
Patrick went on to explain that Jesus did this by believingin his Father’s power, and that he would take that same example. He told the Samaritan’s Purse staff that he intended to read scripture, and use it against the evil one in the name of Jesus Christ.
Peter is very happy to own a Bible, and he considers it the most important thing in his life, because the Word says “everything shall perish but the Word of God shall remain forever.” Peter expressed that he finds blessings each time he reads from the scriptures.

Weses Evelyn, an 11-year-old girl who is from the Karamoja region of Uganda, was saved last November. Her parents do not attend church, but allowed Evelyn to go to Sunday school each week with neighbors in town. Evelyn remained interested in Sunday school because she loved to come and sing songs to the Lord. Then later, through learning more about God, Evelyn decided to give her life to Him. She stated, “I am now happy because I know that Jesus loves me.”
Evelyn is from the Pokot tribe, and lives in Amudat, Uganda. There, alcoholism remains a problem. Some of the violence and strife that occurs in this region can be attributed to alcoholism. When I asked Evelyn what makes her most happy about becoming a Christian she told me, “Jesus has saved me from my drunkenness.” I thought that I had surely misunderstood Evelyn: she is only 11 years old! Unfortunately, I had not misunderstood Evelyn. The Pastor of her church went on to explain to me that parents give their children alcohol and byproducts of alcohol early on, as this is sometimes the only thing to give their children for food and drink. Evelyn explained that she would often be drunk and could not do her school work properly. Now, however she is excited about being free of drinking, and relying on Jesus to sustain her. She stated, “Now I will refuse if anyone tries to make me drunk. I know that Jesus loves me and wants me to stay OK.”
During this visit, I was able to provide Evelyn with the gift of a Pokoot Bible, which was provided through Ark Aid. Immediately, Evelyn gripped the Bible to her chest and a smile overtook her face. She said, “I am a very good reader, and I am happy I will now have the Bible to read. I have wanted a Bible.” I encouraged Evelyn to keep trusting in Jesus, and keep reading His Word. I explained to her that His Word will be spiritual food to sustain her in times of despair and heartache!

Laker Evelyn is a 29-year-old woman from the Karamoja region of Uganda. She is married and has four children. Her husband is very active in their local Pentecostal church, and has been encouraging Evelyn to attend for a long time. Recently, Evelyn gave in, and went to church with her husband. While there, she heard a sermon on what Christ did for us on the cross. Two weeks later, she made a decision to follow Him in her life.
When I asked Evelyn what she has come to learn about Christ, she said, “He loves me, and is so gracious. He has saved my life.” Evelyn told me of the way that she used to quarrel with the local women in town. She stated, “I would often drink brew, and would fight with other women, and even cause quarreling with my husband. Now, since I have been saved, I have not quarreled with others.” She went on to tell me that instead of fighting with her fellow community members, she fills her days by singing praises to God. She told me, “I feel so happy when I am singing to God.
After hearing Evelyn’s story of salvation, I pray with her, and present her with a Bible that was provided through Ark Aid. She was elated. She clung to the Bible and told me, “I have never had a Bible before. Now I can be hearing from God.” I encouraged Evelyn to read God’s Word daily. I encouraged her to keep walking with Him so that he can fill her heart with a peace that passes all understanding. Instead of arguing and fighting with others, I pray God will continually fill her with His love.

Longiranyana Theresa, a 55-year-old woman from the Karamoja region of Uganda, recently lost one of her six children. Theresa explained the agony, grief, and despair she felt after losing her child to malaria. She stated, “I couldn’t move around as much, and I felt like I didn’t have any hope.” In the midst of her despair, Theresa was sharing her experience with one of her neighbors. Her neighbor suggested that Theresa should go to church, and find God there. Her neighbor explained that God would be the only one who could help her through that situation.
Theresa followed her neighbor’s advice, and began attending the local Anglican Church in the Amudat area. She said at first, she was just happy to have the fellowship with Christians. Then, as she began to learn more about Jesus, she accepted Him to be her Savior. She told me that He indeed saved her from the pits of her grief and despair. She said, “Before becoming a Christian, I got many problems, especially when I lost my child. Now, I still get some problems, but I don’t fear. I trust in God to take care of me.”
Theresa was such a testimony of true faith and dependence on Christ. After praying with her, I was able to present her with a newly translated Pokoot Bible which was provided by Ark Aid. She was overjoyed as I handed it to her. She told me, “I am so happy because I have four children at home now. Now, we can be reading the Bible together as a family. I have never had a Bible in my home before.” My prayer is that she will use His Word to speak to her at times that she still feels twinges of grief. He is truly the Great Comforter.

Lonyakemei Maria, a 50 year old mother of eight children, was recently saved in her local Anglican Church. Maria is from the Amudat district in Karamoja, Uganda. On this particular day, she walked 12 kilometers to attend a celebration with all nine Anglican churches in her area. She was ecstatic to see all of her brothers and sisters in Christ from across her region. It was a rare occurrence to be all together.
As I started to talk with her, she shared with me her salvation story. She talked of her past addiction to alcohol, and how that caused her to neglect her children. She stated, “Often I would spend all the money on alcohol. I didn’t buy food for the children. I didn’t know how to be a good mother.” There was sorrow in her eyes as she talked of the pain she caused her eight children because of her alcoholism. However, Maria’s life immediately changed when she heard the Word of God. She said, “I now live differently. I know God as my friend and my provider.”
I was so encouraged by Maria’s apparent joy. It was a beautiful gift to be able to provide her with a recently translated Pokoot Bible through Ark Aid. She was ecstatic as she held the Bible in her lap. She stated, “I am so happy to receive this Bible. It has been the missing thing in my home. I have two children who can now also read the Bible with me.” I was inspired by this mother who professed that she once neglected her children, but now is most concerned with her children’s spiritual well-being! What a blessing to see how Christ changes lives and entire families with His love and commands.
